With the women’s AFL season already underway and the men’s season soon to commence, the release last week of Concussion in Sport Australia’s Position Statement has been well timed. As the summer of cricket winds up over the next month or so, we will in turn see the nation-wide roll out of our winter sports. The contact nature of many Australian winter sports brings with it the inherent risk of sport-related concussion (SRC), a condition that has been gathering enormous attention and in turn heightened awareness and the development of improved management algorithms in recent years.
Collaboration between the Australasian College of Sport & Exercise Physicians (ACSEP), Sports Medicine Australia (SMA), the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has delivered the “If in doubt, sit them out” initiative including a comprehensive website with information on sport-related concussion for coaches, parents, athletes and medical practitioners alike.
Our Specialist Sport & Exercise Physicians - Dr Stuart Down and Dr Peter Fuller -are experienced in the assessment and management of sport-related concussion and can provide information on the best way to individualise the needs of someone suffering from this condition. To ensure the correct diagnosis is made, and to ensure a safe and timely return to sport, contact one of our Sport & Exercise Physicians today on 9885 8961
